Open Access (OA) is the immediate, online, free availability of research outputs. There are several ways to publish in Open Access. You can: self-archive your publication into an institutional repository (referred to as Green Open Access)or you can publish directly in an OA journal (referred to as Gold Open Access).

By making research freely available to anyone who needs it, open access (OA) publishing allows wider knowledge dissemination, removes reading restrictions in its gold form, and offers more opportunities for researchers to improve the visibility of their work and build a strong reputation. Green open access through self-archiving was initially enabled through institutional or disciplinary repositories, as a growing number of universities adopted policies to encourage self-archiving. Self-archiving repositories do not peer-review articles, though they may hold copies of otherwise peer-reviewed articles.

Recently an even more disruptive form of OA has emerged, in the form of illegal article copies retrievable from academic social networks or pirate sites.
